I Ching Drumming
The I Ching, also known as “The Book of Changes,” is an oracular system of transformation that is over 5000 years old. Some accounts say it may be even older. The I Ching consists of eight elements: Mountain, Earth, Fire, Wind, Lake, Thunder, Water and Sky, also known as Heaven. The beauty of the I Ching is that since its based on elements, everyone can relate to it. After all, we all live on the same planet and deal with the same elements, and the same human experiences of fear, love and everything in between. This makes the I Ching an archetypal system that can speak to anyone and everyone.
You can access all 64 drumming patterns on the app, Be Tao Now ~ I Ching Drumming for Triumphant Living! Each hexagram, known to some as a Gene Key, consists of 2 elements, (see right for the Joy hexagram). You can also listen to the rhythms of the elements here. Click on the element below to listen to its drumming pattern. Notice how the element is drummed from the bottom up. For example, look at the pattern for Mountain. The rhythm counted out is 1 and 2 and 3 (the three is twice as long as 1 and 2), or you can also hear it as, “Mountain keeping still.”

The benefits of drumming are numerous. Drum therapy is an ancient approach that uses rhythm to promote healing and self-expression. Recent research reviews indicate that drumming accelerates physical healing, boosts the immune system and produces feelings of well-being, a release of emotional trauma, and reintegration of self. Other studies have demonstrated the calming, focusing, and healing effects of drumming on Alzheimer’s patients, autistic children, emotionally disturbed teens, recovering addicts, trauma patients, and prison and homeless populations. Study results demonstrate that drumming is a valuable treatment for stress, fatigue, anxiety, hypertension, and a wide range of physical disabilities.
Only ten minutes of drumming can get a person into alpha state, a light trance state that brings about deep relaxation, helps access creativity and problem solving, improves mood by elevating serotonin levels and boosts the immune system. Drumming also synchronizes the frontal and lower areas of the brain, integrating nonverbal information from lower brain structures into the frontal cortex, producing feelings of confidence, ease, understanding, integration, allowing one to tune into inner wisdom which surpasses ordinary understanding in the way our left brains can process. These feelings of well being and knowing tend to linger long after the drumming has stopped.
Sound healing has become very popular as scientists have discovered that because humans are vibrating masses of energy, vibration can act upon us to change our feeling states, our thinking, brain synapses, thus changing our DNA and therefore affecting our lives in powerfully positive ways.
This is how drumming can affect us. Combine sound therapy with the ancient wisdom of the I Ching and you have a super charged, potent system of transformation.
