Can one be happy all the time? Probably not. Some think they’d be happy living on top of a mountain alone. But, they still have memories to contend with, chock full of perceptions of the meanings of past events. Our thoughts determine whether or not we’re happy. More importantly, our perceptions around our experiences determine how we feel about any given occurrence.

A Chinese doctor asked me, “What emotions do you feel?” I was confused about the question and asked him to repeat it. My response, “All of them.” He smiled and said, “That’s right.” He then proceeded to tell me that many of his clients claimed to never feel angry, upset or sad. He knew they were deluding themselves.

We may have been told its not all right to feel all of our emotions. We may have been told we had no right to be angry when we were forced to eat food we detested, like peas or wax beans, when there are starving children in Africa. In certain generations, boys were told they were weak if they cried. Girls may have been told they should shut up and let the boys win, or boys’ opinions were more important.

Emotions get pushed aside when we’re given cues that its not all right to feel how we feel. The truth is, we can be unconsciously ruled by emotions that we try to suppress. Stuffed feelings have a way of coming up at the most inopportune times, if we’re lucky. Worse, negative emotions build up over time and cause stress, can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease and a whole host of other issues.

But guess what? Although you may not be happy 24/7, you can program your default emotion to happiness. That does not mean you won’t feel all of the other emotions. In fact, I hope you do. That’s healthy. You can feel good, fulfilled, joyful, at peace a good portion of the time. More importantly, you can have dominion over your emotions so they don’t rule you. That is true freedom.
